On 22 October 2025, teachers from the Confucius Institute at University of Hull visited the University’s South East Asia Museum to take part in a cultural exchange event.
Drawing on the museum’s collections and the curatorial expertise of its Director, Dr Monica Janowski, the two sides discussed plans for an exhibition centred on the theme of “Dragon Culture”. Conversation focused on how to bring out the connections between the museum’s artefacts and traditional Chinese culture, and how exhibits might illustrate the long history of exchange between Chinese civilisation and other Asian cultures.
The South East Asia Museum holds more than 3,000 artefacts, spanning categories including social customs, costume, weaponry and musical instruments. The two sides agreed to work together on a jointly curated exhibition exploring Chinese cultural themes, making use of the Chinese-related items already in the museum’s collection. They also plan to collaborate on community engagement and public education activities, helping to strengthen cultural exchange and educational cooperation between the UK and China.
