The CIUH is serving as a dynamic hub for the promotion of Chinese language and culture, the Confucius Institute at the University of Hull is committed to engaging communities across the Humber and East Yorkshire region, as well as the wider coastal areas of Yorkshire and Lincolnshire.
Our Mission
- To pioneer innovative approaches in the teaching of Chinese as a Foreign Language, drawing on new technologies—such as digital media, social networks, virtual environments, and gamified learning—and forward-thinking pedagogies.
- To develop professional training programmes for Chinese language teachers across the UK and Europe, including primary, secondary, and tertiary educators.
- To establish a Centre of Excellence for innovative Chinese language teaching within the region.
- To support and grow academic collaborations between the University of Hull and Tianjin Normal University, our valued partner institution.
Our Objectives
We aim to realise our mission through the following key initiatives:
- Organising programmes of Chinese cultural events and exchange activities to foster mutual understanding between China and the UK.
- Developing flexible Chinese language courses—part-time, evening, and vocational—tailored for adult learners, local businesses, and the general public.
- Providing training and resources for primary and secondary school teachers, helping to embed Chinese language and culture in school curricula.
- Establishing a regional HSK Test Centre (Hànyǔ Shuǐpíng Kǎoshì), serving Yorkshire, Lincolnshire, and the Humber as a hub for Chinese language proficiency test.
- Delivering language and cultural awareness workshops for University of Hull staff and students, promoting cross-cultural communication and understanding.
- Offering professional development courses in Teaching Chinese as a Second/Foreign Language (TCSL/TCFL).
- Supporting educational research programmes focused on language learning and intercultural exchange.
